The legendary Waldo Sexton (1885-1967) was an
important personality in the vitality, development, and growth of Vero Beach. He
was born in Shelbyville, IN in 1885. He graduated from Purdue University
School of Agriculture in 1911. In 1914 he came to Vero Beach on a business trip
and decided to stay and work for Indian River Farms Company. He married and had
four children.
Over the years he became a prominent civic leader
and was instrumental in furthering the citrus, cattle, and tourism
industries in Indian River County.
Other familiar and famous Waldo Sexton
developments include the Driftwood Inn; Ocean Grill; and McKee Botanical Garden
(formerly McKee Jungle Garden). Anecdotal stories of Waldo's life are many, and
attempts have been made to capture and define the personality of the man. Over
the years they have become part of the common local lore.
Waldo died in 1967 at the age of 82.
The tile image on this page incorporates
